i 'm running XP pro. and have 4 USB ports, and lately my mouse port has been acting up. the mouse, every 15 secs, stops working and the sound blaster makes those "thump thump" noises( as in recognizing something is in the USB port), and then returns to normal again.

any idea as to why that is??

Loose plug, faulty mouse, dodgy drivers. Try another USB mouse if possible.

Sounds like the PSU to me. I have had literally dozens of cases like this over the last couple of years. Try a PSU first. I think you will find that is the place to start.

Have you checked the power management settings, there is a feature where XP will switch a USB device off when it is not in use. Although having said that the time frame is usually more than 15s.

Check the USB port for dust etc or maybe try another port if you can.

cheers

You don't unless you know what you're doing
They can give you a real whack even though when they've been powered off for a while
There are tools you can buy to test them with
Best way is to replace it.
I doubt this is the cause of the problem though

Have you tried another mouse yet
