of course i'm using AVG but a question if i may - the test result today quoted

"viral infection found" - which was, from the info window,

objects:-boot sector of disk C
result:-reading error

apparently i have version 7.1.362
virus base 276.133.3/173

doesn't make a lot of sense to me so was wondering if someone would enlighten me please

My 1000th post - ;) . If possible, can you post along a screenshot showing the section that you had depicted via ImageF1 (is it functioning?) or Imageshack.us?

Cheers :)

Press "Print Screen" then paste into MS Paint or any other image program.

Sounds like a boot sector virus, have you allowed AVG to remove the infection?

Cheers

yeah, that's what it is - the top 2 entries in results are

object result status

partition table (MBR) - change - changed
boot sector of disk C - reading error - error

in the object summary - infected = 1
cleaned etc. = 0

and also

virus identified java/openstream
C:\WINDOWS\.ipi_cache\jar\1.0\javainstaller.jar-31f07c88-3938fc65.zip

but it didn't, so i tried to be a little inventive!! - the virus is called "java/openstream" so i remembered there is an icon on control panel - clicked it, opened the cache tab and cleared the cache - then in win explorer deleted the folder "ipi_cache" - no surprises yet, so maybe i've fluked it?? - guess another scan will be the real test

Its good practice to flush the Java cache and then disable the feature.
