i hav decided to swap motherboards, two problems present themselves:
One: the two PSUs are different, ATX and AT Both mobos are different too.
Two: the wires from the switches are really different. in one pc they are completely seperate plugs with two wires on each plug which plug into a 12 pin and little 7 pin. the plugs look the ones that plug into ur CD/DVD from the soundcard. they say power LED, HDD LED, reset switch, the last one is unlabeled and has red and black wires. motherboard here is an ASUS. then the is a plug that says standby, which has blue and white plugs but the actual wires are not connected either end. where does this go? as it mite make the switch work (power button didnt work)
on the other pc (VIA motherboard) the is one 9 pin plug with wire colurs (in order from left to right across) white, green, yellow, white, blue, white. these differ from the othe pc. is there any way to swap the mobos over?

at and atx rquire different powersupplys and different powerswitchs which often means different cases.

BE CAREFULL WITH AT POWER SWITCHES AS THEY ARE 240 VOLT !

okay focussing on the best pc, VIA PIII 750mHz, AT PSU

From PSU to Mobo, two plugs
20 pin with only 19 wires
6 pin with two wires (blue and black

plug in the 20 pin and the fan works full power. Add the 6 pin and it bascially dies, wth a small breath of air coming out. pull it out again and it returns to normal.

Nothing beeps, no screen image showing POST. graphics card does work.
2 ram slots, ram is fine 256mb and 64mb sticks respectively. 2 ide slots, 3 pci slots and 1 agp slot

any ideas?

You can't use an AT PSU. It must be ATX.
