hey everyone
im new to these forums on the net but i was told its the best way for help
So heres my problem

i recently changed most of my pc ond now i cant play any movies or clips on web site.whenever i use any types of clip players like windows media, Divx player, real player, power dvd, etc...
my pc either freezes or i get the windows explorer crash.
now i read on one of the forums that the power suply could be the problem but i want to try every other solutions before going out and buy a new one.
but just to note my power suply is one the only part that i DIDN'T change.

now i downloaded a ton of codecs and still nothing. I scanned my pc with norton anti-virus and with adaware pro everything is clear. so if theres something that im missing please tell me
thanks alot everyone

What version of Windows is installed?

Whats the speed of the CPU?

How much ram is installed?

You could post a hijackthis log here http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

Unzip the hijackthis file first, run it, then scan / copy and paste the log here, just to make sure.

My first bet is Drivers or Graphics card personally......

What Graphics card/drivers you running?

And welcome to PF1 :-)

Chill.

The most obvious thing to look at first is codecs. Its NOT going to be a power supply issue, and even a low end pentium 2 CPU can run movies smoothly, so I doubt that too. Graphics drivers are possible but definitely way down the list to look at.

There are Many REALLY crap codec packs around like "Nemo" and others, that install a ton of spyware BUT are as buggy as hell.

Un-install ALL codecs, then run Spybot or another spyware remover. Then install FFDSHOW and maybe Vosub codecs, thats it... thats all you need, 99% of movies and video clips will play on just those two except maybe quicktime (eew). I would avoid Divx as well, there is no need to have it.

A few years ago I installed dozens of codecs not knowing exactly what I needed and had constant stability problems. The problem is I found a few codes were pigs to get rid of and I need to reinstall Windows. If you still have probs, nuke windows and install FFDshow and Vosub, I guarantee it will work like a champ.

Perhaps you do mean 80 GB ?And why didn't you install SP2 since it offers tons of vital updates and patches?

Cheers :)

well 80 ghz does look a bit stupid

and for sp2 i cant install it because my windows cd isnt "official"
but on my old pc i used the same win xp without sp2 and could play movies without a crash or freeze so i doubt that it would be the problem

Not a good idea to go 'fessing up to that sorta thing around here.

Try using http://www.videolan.org after you've removed ALL video codecs.
VideoLAN Client (VLC) will play almost any file you can possibly throw at it, but the advantages of the likes of Nemo and/or K-Lite Codec packs is that its all contained within the application itself. Worth the download :)

but i still dont know how to remove the older codecs installed on my pc

Can't see anything obvious.

Beyond that, you have to realise you could spend maybe 10hours+ playing around trying to get Windows clean or a confirmed 1 hour ish reinstalling and setting everything back up, hope you can see what I am getting at.

BTW Don't use Nortons AV (saw reference to it), its a pig as its simply slows down general OS operation. Everyone has there own preference, but try something else even a free AV like AVGFREE. You can always switch back if you don't agree (although I doubt you will after using something else for a while).

Do a clean install and the 2 codecs I suggested, post back if symptoms persist.

Oh You may also need to powever DVD, can't remeber. Try without first.

NO NO HELL NO!!!

Nemo and K-Lite are junk

FFDSHOW is open source with NO spyware and is the industry standard for playing ripped movies, Where do you think those packs get there codec source from? They just add there spyware crap and repackage it.

Don't touch them with a BARGE POLE.

FFDSHOW and Vosub all the way!.

There are plenty of threads all over the net to back up what I am saying (to lazy to re-find one). Have a look

spyware in Nemo? they must have added it recently. i havn't touch it for a long time.

try not to use codec packs if you can because everyone has a different idea on what codecs are best etc and a lot bundle codecs/filters that can clash on some pc's and most of the codecs will simply never be used.

Battleneter

Seriously, don't touch those codec packs!

Well I am in the the twilight zone. One of us is taking drugs.
For the recored about 18 months ago ish I ran spybot and then installed Nemo, ran spybot again, HEAPS of spyware. I did this cause the thread I read warned of this. Not only that but the codecs arn't as up to date as FFDSHOW (open source) etc.

I just googled it and came up with a heap of threads. Ill just cut and paste, rather than link (a few porn pics lol).

grakh at 2005-03-12 13:54 GMT:

Codecpack might not only contain spyware and virii, but they often make it hard to uninstall (often you have to reinstall your OS), sometimes contain parts which should NEVER be installed on the same system (ie Nemo used to have this problem) and in other ways make your system unstable. Get FFDshow instead. if you need an encoder, it is better to just get the one you want.

Fahrenheit at 2005-02-12 15:17 GMT:

Do NOT download ANY "codecpack"!!! -> They often contain spyware! The only thing i use to playback movies is ffdshow (XviD, DivX, Ac3, subtitles and many more!) and an DVD-player (recommend PowerDVD)! ffdshow: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow PowerDVD: http://www.gocyberlink.com/multi/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=1

Ok well lets put it this way

I have over 700 ripped movies (all legit swiss skiing movies ). And all I use is FFDSHOW, Vosub and power DVD for well DVD's. This setup does not "glug" up your system, FFDshow has very low CPU usage compared to other codecs and no spyware.

well i see who the ffdshow fanboy is ;)

i don't like codec packs in the first place however i suspect the spyware your talking about is actually from the adware supported codecs it has bundled with it. if you download the codec seperately you still get the spyware. i moight be wrong as i havn't touch a codec pack in ages and there is no need to.

as far as ffdshow goes it has crashed out most of my pc's and mates so its got the bin. XVID handles most and is much smaller download than the likes of divx.

now back to the actually problem.....

i recently changed most of my pc ond now i cant play any movies
so what have you changed? from what to what?

Ummmmmmm ok, twighlight zone, never seen FFDShow crash a system.

I am a FFDshow fanboy as I have tried nearly everything else perosnally and not just relied of forum posts. You clearly don't read forums like Nforce.nl, ISOnews or VCDquaility, I have to say its fairly common knoweledge.

There are a lot of poor codec packs out there, and the crashing is probably codec related.

BTW there is nothing wrong with Xvid (except the crappy player), but it does NOT play all the newest rippied movies, it also has higher CPU usage than FFDshow. If you don't download ripped movies you won't know this.

forgodsakes man, loose all the codecs and JUST install FFDshow, Vosub and powerDVD, then come back here and post "thanks you were right".

Good move on swapping AV BTW :)
