If anyone buys into Google as I do, here's their latest offering,

http://talk.google.com/

Apparently using the Jabber protocol, you dont need this client if you use Gaim or Trillian. Just keeping our forum up to date ;)

Cool.

Instructions for configuring GAIM, Trillian etc are here (http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html).

Everyone else must be trying to register, because it keeps timing out for me...

Very interesting. :)

Google is certainly putting it's fingers into a lot of pies lately. Any ETA on the Google browser yet? ;)

its kinda nice, very simple and basic. Im probli liking it because msn is getting so bloated with sh!t (the next version of msn (7.5) includes "dynamic backgrounds" ie moving animated background. - i actually think it was released as a final build today)

However with no important IM features like webcam, im not sure if this will take off

I love it

Found the details earlier on this morning and set up Gaim to use it at work, brilliant!

Added myself to my Jabber.org.nz account, excellent!

Found out a few hours later the client had been released, and was loving it! Smooth, slick, simplistic.. What more could you want!?!

Loving it!

I cant get to the "How to setup with Gaim" but thats okay coz I did it this morning and still remember it. Good to see them supporting projects like it and Psi :)

To add it to Gaim, you need to set your Username: ChillingSilence
Server: gmail.com
Click on "More Options" and add the Connect Server as: talk.google.com

Moving thread to PressF1 Forum

My current favorite google myth is they are going to deploy free wifi hotspots over the US. Given the res of most of NZ on google earth, it *may* be a while before that gets here :-)

anyway up and going over here using GAIM.. veryqyiet [at] gmail.com for those who want to chat.

Mess patch? its good aye, but its still fairly resource hogging, even if you do patch it.

My basic feeling is an instant messaging program shouldnt lag, however the ability to send files, view webcams etc still needs to be included to be considered an IM in this day an age. Google's going to have to up the ante a bit in my opinion

my msn doesnt seem too bad, i can run games in the background with no problems at all. Gaim on the other hand is a dead simple IM and it does the job, but for some reason i like msn better, but i dont even use half the crap that comes with msn...

yea maybe my computers just cr@ppy. Go the celeron!

Is there any reason why this was moved to PressF1 from PC World Chat? No-one really seems to need any help.

Because you can?

Yup... Its not off-topic chat, not asking for a web designer etc... it'll get better press etc ;)

Personally I think its great how fast and minimalistic it is.

I actually had a company approach me, they wanted to use my Jabber server for their PDA Jabber Client software. I politely declined, but do remember them telling me the that they wanted to use Jabber because it uses on average 1/7th the bandwidth that MSN does!?

Heres a page of little tips on using Google Talk, such as making text *bold* and _italic_ in convo. http://www.fluxiontech.com/?p=61

It really is quite lite but the GUI is a little helpful, with docking convo windows etc. The talk functionality should come in handy with keeping in contact with my Mum in the USA. Just to get it straight, Skype does this also for free, and also has a pay per minute call-to-landline service called SkypeOut?

Yes, but I dont trust where skype's sending the VoIP data.... :-/

I dont think you need invites anymore, gmail comes as part of your Google account.

Joining without an invite applies so far only in the US & only for people with a mobile phone.

eek, my bad. as I said in the other thread, I knew of US residents being able to register via cell (https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1), but I noticed on the google accounts registration page (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount) that gmail was listed as one of the services, I must have jumped to conclusions.

All I can say is "GO GOOGLE" good on ya. They are certainly doing some bum kicking & good things. Getting bigger & bigger all the time, making money. How long before they are called 'Googlescum" or somesuch like NZ Telecom & Microsoft. PJ

I think the difference is,that M/S and Telecom are seen to have a virtual monopoly, but I see your point.

Google has a virtual monopoly on searching - there are alternatives, but everyone knows & uses google. The difference between them & the other 2 monopolies you mentioned is that Google has a mission statement of do no evil, while microsoft has always been about getting more money by any means possible (the law is a minor inconvienence) & the NZ govt sold telecom to an overseas corporation with the same mentality.
