This nephew of mine has dropped his Dad's Toshiba laptop, Portege A100 and it is unbale to boot now. While booting, an "IDE error" appears on the top left corner of the screen.

It is able to boot from CD and I was trying to reinstall Windows. Went as far as deleting the partitions but it halted at formatting the HDD. Error says "unable to detect harddisk! Why is it able to delete the partition but unable to find the HDD?

I am suspecting the HDD has died and maybe should replace a new one. Turned the Laptop over, but couldn't find a single screw where I can unscrew and open up the back cover.

How easy (or difficult) it is to repair a laptop computer?

Cheers

Difficult.
It may have just come loose - look up the manual for that modl on their website - it will show you where the drive is located - usually a cover underneath hides it - it might be the cable has come loose from the board.
