View Full Version : Dead Laptop

My Compaq Presario 2100 with XP has gone dead. The power on light comes on, but it doesn't look at the hard disk. The screen is completly blank and I can't get into the bios to get it to load from floppy. The hard disk is spinning when on mains power, but starts and then stops with a clunk when on battery power.
Any suggestions would be welcome, Thanks, Arjay

So does it get into Windows at all with Power?

Or can u hear the hdd spinning and thats it? Nothing else?

Is the battery flat?

Theres no floppy in it, while its trying to do something / load is there?

It doesn't do anything..ie, it doesn't look at the disk so it can't possibly load windows. The screen is totally blank, but the 'power on' light is on.
I can't get the bios screen to check anything. It doesn't seem to go through the motions and the screen is blank. I thought that the bios is on a chip, not on disk so it should appear if the screen is ok. Do you agree?
Thank, Arjay.

I had a very similar problem with my Compaq a couple of years ago. Turned out to be a faulty RAM stick. Is the laptop still under waranty? Try replacing the RAM and see if that fixes it.

You won't get into BIOS or any boot with faulty RAM.

On startup, does anything come onto the screen?
Do the keyboard lights flicker at all?
Apart from the noise the harddrive makes, is there any other signs of life?
