Did a search here and found some old opinions about FTP ... but nowadays what is the best freeware FTP around. SmartFTP? (I used to use Cute FTP but I don't think it's freeware anymore). I run Windows XP but don't use Internet Explorer if it makes a difference.

Just use a browser to log into it. Save you downloading a FTP program at all.

You can use Opera to log into an FTP site. So any browser should.

Depends what u want to use it for. If its just for getting files, a browser will do.

I played with a few, and settled on FTP commander, finding it easy to get around.

It is the free version ,available here (http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm)

Out of all the FTP programs i've used, SmartFTP is the best, it certainly gets my vote

Alternatively use the DOS FTP program - just open command prompt and type FTP! :D

This works well, no downloading and installation needed and is part of Windows itself. But does XP come with a ftp client built-in?

There is nothing wrong with these command-line clients. There are very few commands to learn: put/mput, get/mget, cd/lcd, ls/lls, pwd/lpwd, open and close, binary and ascii.
