One or more drives has developed a bad sector...press any key to start scan disk. when scan disk starts, after reaching 16% or 2% sometime it says Scan Disk encountered a data error while reading fat on drive c.
This error prevents scandisk from fixing this drive.

What should be done in this case?

Format it , if it continues to give trouble dispose of it.

Though running something like diskill on it may worth a try before trashing it.

Scandisk ought to be able to "fix" the sectors by mapping them out. But if they are in critical areas of the disk it can't do that.

Try doing a scandisk in Safe Mode, and it might have marginally better chances of working. ;)

Bad sectors showing up are a bad sign. The FAT tables are critical areas.
