Enlightenment - what is it exactly? Linux window mananger

What exactly is it, do i need kde or gnome if I wish to use it, or does it run without them
most images i see of it tend to look like this here (http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=385&slide=4&title=elive+beta+0.1+screenshots)

If I download it and install it how do i make my enlightenment look like that, does it require a desktop thingie like KDE, Gnome, XFCE to make it look like that or is that how it naturally looks

Any help would as usual be appreciated

Thanks
Nigel

see wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlightenment_%28X_window_manager%29)

A window manager just controls stuff like window placement, appearance and icons etc.

Desktop Environments such as KDE have a window manager (which can be changed) but also provide other features such as Control Panels and Applications i.e. more like you see with MS Windows or OS X.

More experienced Linux users tend to not use KDE or Gnome as they hate the extra hard drive space wasted, unwanted applications and general "bloat".

The lack of a large K or Footprint icon may point at them not using KDE or Gnome
