I am baffled by the invisibility of my favorites in Internet explorer and the links on a toolbar for frequently used sites. I say 'invisibility' because when I try to enter a replacement link into favorites or the toolbar, I'm asked if I want to overwrite the existing bookmark. I have tried everything I can think of to recover visibility of the favorites, but to no avail. I wonder if anyone has a suggestions?

I am running Windows XP Pro and have two other user accounts on this machine.

Try this .

click /start then run in this box type sfc /scannow this will run the windows file checker, and ask for your install cd if it finds something amiss.
note there is a space after sfc.
In IE go to tools then Internet Options /Advanced scroll down to "Enable personal Favorites Menu" tick the box or untick it then restart IE.
see what happens.
Here is one page about favorites folder being empty.

Try this fix here which may help.

Johnboy,

Many thanks for all the imformation and possibilities. I tried everything, again all to no avail, I could not recover the 'favorites". The registery entry was as prescribed. When I ran the scan (sfc) I was warned that the version of XP on my disk was earlier than that on the computer - I suspect because I have SP1 and SP2 installed. The suggestions on the other URLs were similarly ineffective.

But, when I rebooted, I was informed that IE 6 had been removed from this computer, did I want to clean up all it's personal settings! I have no idea how this happened, but perhaps it's a blessing in disguise. So I cleaned up and guess I'll now have to downlaod a new version of IE6. Which rather solves the problem in a curious and roundabout way.

I'm presently using Firefox which my son swears by - so maybe I'll try that for a few days.

I suspect that what I really need to do is a a disk clean-up by formatting and a new installation.

Anyway, many thanks for your prompt and interesting response to my cry for help....
