View Full Version : 100MB Lan + 256k DSL = Dialup speeds

Ok, here's the situation:

[DSL Modem]------[Computer 1(D/L@~33kb/s)]------[Hub 100mb]-----[Computer 2(D/L@~5kb/s)]

Transfer rates from computer to computer are certainly faster than 5kb/s, copying shared files is as fast as would be expected from that setup.

What's up with the download speed on Computer 2 ???

what OS's and what protocols are used for what ?

Computer 1 is XP Home Sp2, Computer 2 is XP Pro Sp2 - with both just using TCP/IP as far as I know.

Have you tried a different cable at all?

Is the XP Home PC sharing the internet with XP Pro PC, or does the hub connect directly to the router?

You weren't downloading on both PC's at the same time were you?

how are you shareing the net? ICS, proxy direct to router?

check firewalls.

the only time i've seen this is the pc had spyware damage (try winsockfix).

If both PC's are downloading at the same time, the PC which started a download first will grab the lion's share of the bandwidth unless you are using a download manager and can throttle the speed.

Think it is done via the exchange setup. You used to be able to have both PC's sharing the same external IP getting good download speeds, but after some tweake they did, the packet requests are handled differently (or something alone those lines). There is a more official explanation which I can't quite remember ...

XP home is sharing the Internet with ICS, modem is directly connected to PC 1 (as in the diagram), only PC 2 was downloading at the time... crazy :@@:
