View Full Version : Pop-ups and Task Manager wont load

I have been working to recover a computer that was infested with spyware and have hit a stone wall. I went through add/remove programs and deleted everything that should not be there. Ran a full windows update, installed trendmicro pccillin and did a full scan, and then ran adaware. The computer runs much better but I am still getting occasional popups.

Also a strange problem is that I can not get the task manager to load. When I hit alt-ctrl-del it shows up for a brief moment then goes away. I am guessing I still have one bugger of a program still installed but am stuck on what I can do to get rid of it.

Has anyone run into this same sort of problem? What did you do to recover? I am really doing my best not to have to format and reinstall this machine.

Thanks for the help.

install firefox and see if you still get popups if you dont then set it as default browser........sometiems this is easier than trying to get rid of that spyware which I KNOW can be extremely hard to do..........

I have found HijackThis to be a valuable tool in fixing this problem. Give it a run and go through the list of processes to see if you can identify something hiding in there and get HJT to fix it.

johnboy that page describes the problem perfectly but I dont have any instance on netstatt.exe running. When I run a Hijack This scan it comes up with lots of stuff... Some of which looks correct and other lines I question. I ran a full scan with an updated trendmicro virus def but it doesnt find any virus...

can anyone help me in setting up Hijack to kill this?

I've used this freebie to restore taskbar/quicklaunch successfully:

You can post your HijackThis log here for people to check if you wish. Make sure you close all your programs first to make it easier to read.

have you installed and run spybot s&d?

did you try the fileassociation fix I posted ?

Try this http://dl.filekicker.com/send/file/153006-O03L/trjsetup.exe

From here http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/

Download / install / update it...do a scan

Something like a worm or trojan, may have installed commands in the registry, taking over the task manager. This is why it closes.

Or see if stinger http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe
picks anything up from here. http://vil.nai.com/VIL/STINGER/

I have been working to recover a computer that was infested with spyware and have hit a stone wall.
When I hit alt-ctrl-del it shows up for a brief moment then goes away.

pop ups and taskmanger disappearing are classic signs of malware infections.

boot into safe mode and run adaware/spybot (fully updated of course). if they don't show anything try cwshedder and finally run hijackthis and post the log here. (do it ain safe mode as some malware don't show up in normal mode)

make sure all windows is set to veiw ALL files.

check the firewall to see what programs/files are trying to access the net. this should at least give a clue to the culprit.

Well ok... I have tried Trojan Remover, CWShredder, and Stinger. They all find various spyware and viruses and say they fix something but I am still getting popups. I ran HiJack This and here is the log...

This C:\WINDOWS\system32\SINSTANTM.EXE looks suspicious.

It looks like it has something to do with that Aim IM program. Someone has accepted or clicked on a file and accepted it in Aim.

Remove C:\WINDOWS\system32\SINSTANTM.EXE from that hijackthis log. I think task manager may open then.

Or delete this file in safe mode. This file, I think is some kind of AIM virus or trojan.

Also type regedit to go into the registry. Search for SINSTANTM.EXE. If found, delete every instance of it from the registry. MAKE SURE you delete nothing else but this name. Then reboot.

Also run trojan remover click on the utilities menu / 3rd and 4th option, just in case something has hijacked your browser.
