Do you have Tweak Ui installed on your pc?

If not click Start, run then type "control userpasswords2" then click ok then untick Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. HTH

I did this but now the OS won't let me back in - I've since reloaded the system and followed your advice carefully again - and gues what - it still caused problems - the PC kept saying it was starting up but just never did - even after waiting an hour... So - I'm currently reloading it again.
It's an ACER pc with the preloaded OS - and reloading discs - not the true MS OS discs. Cleans off both drives and all programs - but I doubt whether it formats it properly - dunno. Has anyone got any way to eliminate the LOGON screens in XP Home without causing issues?

Windows will only prompt you for a login name if you have more than one user or you have set a password (other than blank). Otherwise TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) has an option for auto logon.
