Google has a lot of entries on "lost windows 2000 key" and some of the messages have useful answers in them.

When you say that you are "missing 5 digits" can we assume part of the sticker is missing?

No program can "recover" the key on a new hard drive, as you say it is not installed so is simply non-existant at this stage.

It does not exist on the CD either.

However I am sure a phone call to MS would recover the situation, given you have "most of" the key.

Only trouble with that is the latest version of Windows Update knows if your key is activated or not and legal (legal is different from working) and if not will not allow anything but vital updates and there is talk that this will stop as well.

As far as I'm aware Win2000 didn't require activation so there should be no problem
Even if it did, there are about eleventy three thousand ways around the problem
Not that I would recommend any of them as it wouldn't be quite kosher now would it.
Maybe his best bet to gain a new legal key is to ring M$oft, explain the situation & if they were any sort of a company with the customer at heart they would supply a new key

The Mods are all busy at work right now and would not notice if you did post a naughty fix .. ( or would they ??)
Cheers Tony

I said it knows the difference between legal keys and valid keys. There is a big difference. It does not depend on activation at all. Therefore 2000 would be covered as well.

Cant see how you would get around it as it would download the update software if it was hacked and again would not allow you to download anything but vital updates.

Anyway I would agree with you and if he has a valid key already but is just missing some digits then he should be able to convince microsoft to give him a new key. Really if MS sold software at student prices to everyone then there would be no issue really. The difference in price is huge and is probably what causes the majority of piracy in the first place but that is getting off topic.

I wouldnt push it Tony ;)

If I can find out what I know by Googl'ing then so can this fella.

There are always keys out there that will be illegit, but still work with MS because the key has perhaps not been reported?!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts & suggestions. I called MS and they asked some questions about the install disk, then said they would generate a new key which should be emailed to me tomorrow.
Cheers Tully4
