ok, my PC's been running fine and their have been no recent software changes. My HD, and DVD Burner are just under a month old and were working brilliant

Its a Celeron 600, 190MB RAM, 160GB HD, Multi Format DVD Burner hooked upto a router through a Cat5 Cable. It's running Windows XP Professional with SP2 and All Security Updates.

It has a wireless mouse and keyboard .

I booted it up and the keyboard and mouse stopped responding. The reciever was still acknowleging a signal but nothing happening.

I reboot the computer and thats where the real problem started. You know where the screen shows that bar go across and goes black, the next stage is to show the XP Logo booting but it keeps resetting their. I've tried Safemode but as it shows the list of files its loading it just reboots. I've tried repairing the installation but that still hasnt worked, when it reset after installing and went to boot the same problem.

The only option i see left is format, but i want to avoid this if possible because i have VERY important files on their and i've seem to lost my backup disc.

Any opinions?

I seems to me to be a SP2 compatibality issue, possably with the keyboard/mouse, as you say they stoped responding. I presume you are working on a diffrent computer. If this is the case I suggest first to fix the problem and then (providing you have the install CDs) if all else fails the make a boot cd, and grab the files that way. (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/)

I also heard that you can install windows XP beside another copy so you know instead of installing in C:\windows\ install in c:\windows2\ then boot to windows 2 and try to retrive the files that way, that being said I have never tried that. Oh I hope for your sake that the files you want to retreve aren't XP encripted, because Windows won't decript them without a valid user certificate, and you can't get that without booting to the OS.

Alternativaly you could try a live linux CD to recover the files. If bandwidth is an issue (you can't DW 600+ mb) then I recomend DSL live cd, is is around 50mb.

I don't think its the keyboard or mouse because I've used it with SP2 ever since it was available. On another note i noticed a blue screen just after the beore it reboots but its to quick to read

BLue scree? It might be signs of HDD failure, though I am not too sure about that since you mentioned that your HDD is new.

Hmm.. a few possibilities with this...
Have you tried to bootup using a bootup disc? Hopefully your BIOS is set so the floppy is the first boot device.

Went researching this... one thing that came up on a regular basis was the abbreviation SP2
Seems some people have problems with it, while most don't.
