My PC doesn't download webpages & email. OS is Windows XP HEd.
Two days ago a couple of Wndows updates were automatically downloaded & I deleted a Hotbar stuff through the regedit. This is the background.

The PC can log into my ISP Slingshot. But all it says now to me is 'server cannot be found'. I am sending this through our laptop through the ISP's free email I set up some time ago.

What should I do now to restore the PC's set ups to get back the internet.
I can't afford to lose some important emails I've saved in a folder in the outlook express.

Could someone please tell me what I should do to safely get it back.

Another spware infection no doubt.
First have a look in Add/Remove programs for new.net and remove if found.
Reboot and check if you can now get traffic.

Removal of spyware will not fix a corrupted winsock key.

The following will need to be done if you can't access web sites to download a winsock repair tool.

Reinstall of the TCP/IP protocol to restore Winsock functionality

Step 1: Delete registry keys

A) Open Regedit from the Run line
B) Go to both of the following keys, export each of them, and then delete them:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock *and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock2
C) Restart the computer

NOTE: It is important to restart the computer after deleting the Winsock keys. *
Doing so causes the XP operating system to recreate shell entries for those two
keys. *If this is not done, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP on top of itself

A) Open the properties window of the network connection
B) Click Install
C) Click Protocol, then Add
D) Click Have Disk
E) Type the path to the nettcpip.inf file, for example: c:\windows\inf, and click
OK (if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder, it may not show up
in the list).
F) You should now see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list of available
protocols. *Select it and click OK.
G) Restart the computer

When the computer reboots you will have functional Winsock keys and web and email should now work.

Thanks Safari. Sorry I was not able to follow your email and do it as I opened it only just now.

Now my attempt is to reinstall OS. In the meantime, I have made it a bit more messy, I think. I will keep you posted as soon as I do it.

Thanks to you all.
