Is anyone else experiencing delays in downloading the updates for AVG 7 or is it just me? (and a few others I know?) The update screen appears to hang (although technically it hasn't) while it is talking to the AVG server. It's pot luck whether the update works or not....

I've done a search through PF1 and Grisoft without luck. I'd be interested to hear other views.

Have the same problem as well. I have been downloading from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4478.html Then using the update from folder option.

There is a big one waiting for download, needed a reboot to install it.

And yes, but I suspect their servers are very busy at the moment with everyone swaping 6 for 7 etc etc, which by the way is still being suported until mid Feb.

One of the Grisoft screens ask you to give your commercial license number.
it says the update service for avg7 is not available for free avg users.
At this time they also appear to have stopped all support for v6.

Seems it is no longer free. What other options exist?

I have been having the same problem but have now downloaded it successfully. I put it down to trying to download while the computer is performing a scan (on start up) and got around the problem by stopping the download, letting the computer get fully up and running then going back and doing the upgrade.

Automatic Updates don't seem to work, but you can grab them here:

I got sick of trying with the built in update...

Just go here:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

and download the two update (bin) files (or one if your using the pro version) and change how it updates through AVG Control Panel > Update Manager > Properties - you can change it back to get the updates from the internet without hassle...

I would say you have tried to upgrade from the AVG Professional Edition instead of AVG free. My auto uprade works fine.

Well for the FREE version there were two updates - a 70KB and a 1.4MB :)

Unless you were behind?!

I am using AVG7 Free, I have just downloaded the .bin files but can find no way of introducing them as updates to the program. I have already read Hado on how to do this "updates through AVG Control Panel > Update Manager > Properties" and it does not seem correct to me. Anyone else know for sure how to do this on the Free version?

Go to the AVG control centre, click on Update Manager -> Properties -> untick "Do not ask for the update source" -> Ok, click on Check for Updates -> Folder -> follow your nose.....

andrew93, thanks for the help, I really appreciate your prompt reply. Seems as if it is the best way to update at the moment.

Support for AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 extended to February 15, 2005

In November, 2004, Grisoft announced the end-of-support of AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 as of January 31, 2005. In order to provide additional time for our customers to upgrade their licenses, this date has been extended to February 15, 2005. All support, including virus database updates, program updates and technical support will be discontinued on this date!

Users of AVG 6.0 who neglect to upgrade to AVG 7.0 by February 15 will no longer be protected from viruses by AVG. In order to continue to be protected by AVG Anti-Virus, you must be using AVG 7.0. Read more...

Home users of AVG Free can find out more about the AVG Free release on the web.

- January 14, 2005 -
My updates for AVG 7 Free include:
u7avi440wk.bin - 4Mb on the 27th and
u7avi444u392u0.bin - 1.39Mb on the 28th

u7avi444u443u0.bin
u7avi444u392u0.bin

These are the 2 updates we are talking about. If you go to the grisoft site they are there for all to see plain as day.
The auto updater works fine just give it time to do its job and stop looking over its shoulder. It is a bit like watching the kettle boil, it seems to take longer when you stand there watching it.

I have recently freshly installed AVG7.0 free edition on two computers.

While updating the virus definitions on one pc I have had no problems, but with my other I have several server timouts and even failed downloads 80% complete. In the end it did however update successfully.

Maybe the servers are stretched as some people have suggested?

P.S. coming from PC-illin 2002 (which I loved), AVG7.0 has so far been a great alternative and not nearly as system resource hungry as other free virus programs that I have tried.
