The subscription renewal price for NAV 2002 was quoted as US $19.95, but when it is converted to $ NZ they charge NZ$60 just to download from the US site.
My NAV 2002 was originally purchased from this US site, is it cheaper to renew a subscription if I purchase a NAV copy from an NZ store.

I would get a later version now of NAV/NIS (2003/2005), that your 2002 subscription has expired.

no i don;t think it makes any difference. however there is a price difference depnding on if you boarght a 1 month ver, 3 month ver or the full 1 year ver.

personally for the cost of the subs you could buy another antivirus with 2 year sub. at the very least have a look at other optoins ;)

You could try Mcafee, they don't charge for updates in NZ. Otherwise try one of the free antivirus programs.

There subscription charges don't very much yet our dollar value has increased quite a bit of recent times.

How can this be. Dammed annoying at the very least, and very worst I feel screwed.

Suggest phone the local crowd on 0800442795
Have just renewed Norton AV 2004 for 12 months, cost NZ$42.90
Dick Smith currently has Norton 2005 AV with 12 months free updates for NZ$98.00 (XS6203)
With the continous updating to the core of Norton, once Nortons is about 3 years old I switch to a new version.

Is tutaenui saying that after one year you do not get charged a renewal cost from Mcafee ?

If you have a current version of NAV you can upgrade to NAV 2006 for NZ $49.95 on the Symantech website.

At the start of May I phoned Symantec NZ. They quoted me $59.95 To renew NAV 2004 updates. NAV 2006 on CD is $65.00.

I wonder why the price difference?

I posted them a cheque at the end of the first week of May for the 2006 CD, and I am still waiting! I have phoned twice and both times they told me "It is on back order and should be out soon. Please be patient". :groan:

I am sure there are plenty of alternatives besides NAV... (surprised that no one has mentioned about these)

Cheers :)

For info I waited 4 weeks and the 2006 CD was delivered. Last Dec the exchange rate was US$0.71, currently it is about US$0.61. If your sub has run out suggest check Symantec for instructions on how to keep your definitions up to date until they deliver.Wonder if the local Symantec wait until they can make up a batch of orders.

I don't think so, Misty. According to this page (http://us.mcafee.com/root/upgradecenter.asp?action=RenewSub&prodID=P2&verID=V10) you have to re-subscribe to receive more virus definitions. I got that page by following a "renew my subscription" link.

Thanks Foxy, don't know why I could not find. However one thing I note, including PC World's comparisons, is that the current price of the program is mentioned but not the cost of renewal. Now this can make a big difference. I have set myself a goal to make some comparisons along this line, not only for myself but for others too, and post it. One thing that BitDefender has I have found is the cost for one, two and three years set out in a table. Not only that, but in the table is also the cost for one, two, three etc computers all set out in the same grid. However there are even downfalls in that approach.

Watch this space !

If your running an old copy of NAV, updating could be the worst thing for your computer as they make their program heaver on your computer each year. So a computer built around 2002 with NAV2002 will suffer big time if you update to the latest version.

Suggest you either update and run NAV2002 or change to a better anti-virus product. AVG or Avast are free, NOD32 is $70 then $40 each year after that.

Hi Foxy
Yes, I have not yet come across an AV program that we have to pay for that gives you succeeding years free. Hopefully you have seen my post --

In all cases there seems to be some lesser amount to pay. So, in the instance we are talking about here, McAfee give the second year NZ$15 cheaper. That seems a bit hard when comparing on a proportionate basis with others it my comparison, particularly Nod32, BitDefender and Kapersky !!

I received an email from Symantec today saying that the CD I ordered has been shipped (at last) and should arrive in 7 to 10 days. :groan:

I personally use AVG free.

It has been suggested on this forum that nod32 is the way to go and Superior to NAV.
