View Full Version : Windows98 Product key

08-08-2000, 05:49 PM
I recently reformatted my hard drive and began reinstalling software only to find that i had no record of my windows 98 product key number. My vendor is unable to assist. i registered my software online at purchase time but the woman i talked to at the microsoft helpdesk claims they do not keep a record of product key numbers. Where can i go now to find out my product key or do i have to pay for a new one?

since win 98 doesn't have any activation procedures it shouldn't be hard to get it up and running.

jasondargie,

Welcome to PressF1!
Can I ask you start this as a new thread and you actually ask the question yourself, rather than dragging up this one which is nearly 5 years old.
What's with the massive list of line-breaks?

Cheers

johnboy, if he has reformatted, there is no way the programs can recover the key from the HDD.

That will only work if there is a version of Windows installed, and for which the key has been used. Until it has been used, it does not exist. It cannot be found.

Try this key code:

**REMOVED**

Lost mine some time ago, hope it is correct sequence, it actually brought back my proper key no.

This Win98a, Win98b, Win98SE.... I believe there was even a Win98SE-r2 which is very uncommon, I'll have to look around.
Its on the CD - The CD tells you it....

If you've got the CD and packet etc then do as I did recently, ring MS explain that the key is lost and they will after asking a few questions generate a new key and email it to you.

I just took a digital pic of the cd and packet etc and emailed it to them to show I had the CD, and they asked for a code off the CD.....etc

Too easy :)

Although the intellectual debate is interesting, this thread is looking more like a 'dead letter' box every day. There hasn't been any original comment by jasondargie as yet and I begin to wonder if it wasn't just an accidental post.
