View Full Version : Difference between Athlon XP's and Semprons?

I have an Asus motherboard with an Athlon XP in it that I want to upgrade over the next three months, only today on [H]ardOCP I saw an article about the Athlon XP's being phased out and a search on Google confirms it.

So, if I do upgrade before all the Semprons in Socket A are phased out, what are the differences between Semprons and Athlon XP's, and which one should I go for? I'm also looking for overclocking capabilites...

xp's are better - the semprons are a down graded version and are aimed at the low budget market , and have been cut back on things which in the end will cut back on speed, They are the amd equiliant to Celerons and you should go for the XP if you plan to keep your motherboard as they are better

The 2 differences are that all the socket A semprons have a 333fsb,and the ratings are designed to corrospond with Celeron's rather then Pentuims.

If you are looking to buy now, then get an Athlon while still available,or a sempron futher down the track,Just keep in mind that a 2800 sempron is not as powerful as an Athlon 2800.

Its also worth noting that all Sempron Socket A cpu's are being phased out as well,so don't expect to find many if any SkA cpu's on the market this time next year, there will certainly be no new models released.

hmm...they havent cut back on anything, they have improved the fsb and tweaked the ratings...that is all, they are an Athlon at heart.

IIRC there's an article in last month's pcworld comparing Athlon 2800+, Semparon 2800+, and Celerom D 2.8ghz.

the bottom line was "Get an Athlon while you still can". Looking at the Benchmark results confirms it.

damn,I shouldn't be making 3 posts in a row,I look foward to the edit function.

Anyhow,Should have said they improved the FSB on the low end models.

As you were.

Damn... knew I should have bought PC World last month! :(

Thanks everyone... looks like I will have to try to convince my boss to get one under the work account and I just pay for it later...

Semprons are the AMD answer to the Celeron. Both are cheap rubbish.
