View Full Version : Logging on and Passwords...

I have had Win XP installed since it first came out. My initial set-up took me straight thru to the desktop without any password selection or similar. This is OK for me as only I use it, no guests, family etc etc.

I suddenly find I am now required to make a password selection before it loads to the desktop. In itself it merely means I now have to click on my name, not a biggie, however I didn't ask for this and would like to dispense with it.

As part of a download for a hobby, I was required to install two files as part of the package in order to make it run. These were : MSXML.MSI a Windows Installer Package, and DOTNETFX.EXE , described as Express Setup Microsoft.

Because the password business followed this installation I suspect one of these two may have altered settings somewhere. Can someone tell me how to change things back ? A system restore hasn't helped and I can't find anything to help in Control Panel/Settings etc, just the ability to select different passwords, not to get rid of all of them.

The dotnetfx.exe is Microsoft .NET framework. I've got it installed on this with its service pack. I dont think this is causing the prob. As I can login to XP normally with it installed. The entry for this is in add/remove programs. (Called Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1).

Not too sure what MSXML.MSI, is or what it does exactly. I would say this would also be in add/remove programs somewhere, BUT I wouldnt have a clue, what the name of it would be in add/remove programs.

You could uninstall both (if u can figure out what the entry for MSXML.MSI is)

Or go to control panel / user accounts / change the way users log on or off, and tick both options on the next screen. (USe the Welcome screen, and use fast user switching).

See if that fixes it. This SHOULD let you log straight into XP without asking for a username / password.

You dont want to be playing with the windows installer (MSI) unless you know for sure it's brocken. Simply uninstalling it does not do the trick in my experience, however, I don't know if it is listed in Add/Remove in XP anyway.

Kelly's Corner (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_passwords.htm) has some password info and a visit to MS (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282866&sd=tech) and some more on securing XP here (http://www.markusjansson.net/exp.html) and lots of security links at this one (http://www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windowsxp/wxpp2.php)

In nutshell, your better off logging on as a user, not admin, even if your the only person that will usually have physical access to the PC, the internet is just another form of access after all and can be a two way street as per control of the PC.
