A friend has sent me an .wps file, so I tried opening it with word but that didn't work. So then I tried Works. That didn't work either.
Word 2000
Works 2000
May be it is some other word proccessor?

The best thing you can do is get in contact with the person who sent you the MS-Works file and ask them to save the document as either a word .doc file, or as an .rtf file.

Get them to re-open the document, and go File --> Save As, and click the drop-down menu labelled "Save-As Type"

Cheers
