View Full Version : Very slow running PC ...

I have a 4 year old PC running Win ME (Pentium 900GHz processor, 192MB RAM) which has recently started running slower than a wet week (it's very slow to start up and opening programmes such as Word, Excel etc takes approx 60 seconds whereas before it was instant).

I have a firewall installed and regularly perform virus and spyware checks so I'm fairly confident it doesn't have a virus.

Last night I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled the o/s and windows ... with the same result, it's still as slow as before.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem?

Have you got anything else besides Windows ME?

If you've formatted the harddrive then it sounds like it maybe a hardware problem. Has anyone had the case open? or been into the BIOS?

No - the last time the case was open was 2 years ago when I put in more RAM. The reason I thought it was a software problem was because when I start it in safe mode, it runs at normal speed. It's darned annoying - lol.

Umm, I might have a version of 98 kicking around somewhere. Why?

900Ghz!!? Wow, can I buy that from you? :p

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive?

How much memory does it think it's got now? Memory does occasionally fail. If you've now got 64MB, it might be a bit slower. :D

if you have formatted shouldnt all your software problems be gone?
my guess is that one of the ram sticks is stuffed and that its only running on 64 or 128mb???
