View Full Version : email with vodafone handsets?

12-10-2004, 10:05 PM
Hi, just wondering if its possible with the very normal models. I don't mean using the fancy handsets that is like 1/2 a PDA ...

I tried it on a Motorola, what I found out is I can send email out. However I can only check email via Vodafone Live. There is something called Inbox (for text) and "Email Inbox" which obviously as it sound should be for emails. I just can't get vodafone emails, I have tried my pop server of my Internet ISP, I cannot get this either.

Anyone had success with receiving emails into the inbox rather than via Vodafone Live?? I have contacted the data team at Vodafone, but they said to me I can try my Internet ISP for their pop address - which does not work. Vodafone as I aware only supplied a smtp server, I substituted a POP instead of the SMTP but it does not work....

Try this page vodafone mail (http://www.vodafone.co.nz/vlive/about_email.jsp?item=Vodafone%20Email).

eh .. thats vodafone live right?
also, they have notificatiions with truncated text msg whenever I get an email from vodafone or via my ISP (Clear Net).
wapEmail which also supports Clear Net, is that time based?

13-10-2004, 10:16 AM
is there a way of actually using the Email Inbox instead like plonking pop.vodafone.co.nz or the like into the settings and it actually works?

13-10-2004, 10:41 AM
I use a t68i ($199 cheapie) to send and receive my @vodafone.net.nz e-mail address. This is via the messages menu, and I don't have to connect to any WAP / Vodafone Live site to connect.

I've got it set-up via the IMAP4 protocol, which means when I delete messages on my phone, it deletes them off the server. I was told by Vodafone that IMAP4 was better than POP3.

I'm pretty sure I can change it to send and receive any POP3 Mail Box?

13-10-2004, 10:50 AM
I forgot to mention, Vodafone sent the e-mail setting straight to my phone, which installed automatically (these are different from the Vodafone Live settings). If your phone is GPRS / Wap capable they may be able to set your up too

13-10-2004, 12:15 PM
i'll give imap a try .. what sorta setting did you use to identify with your ISP??

i tried pop settings, pop.clear.net.nz ... the error just said something like unable to connect to remote server or something. i don't have the phone anymore, it was sold. going back to nokia ...

I have a nokia 6230.And there's a email client built into my phone.I just scroll to the menue .click on email and retrieve and it will retrieve all my emails from 2 vodafone email accounts and also 2 other paradise account.
I can type an email from the email client and send it out also.
I use it all the time for trademe. When somebody uses buy now.I catch the email straight away and reply to them

13-10-2004, 12:18 PM
I setup all my emails using pop3 in my nokia phone!
As long as your phone has a built in email client then it will be able to send and retrieve emails.

Quite easy really

Incoming mail server

Outgoing mail server

Your email adress @vodafone.net.nz

Put those setting into the phone and your away!

13-10-2004, 12:19 PM
TAke a look here to find how to setup your email from using the email client on your phone

13-10-2004, 12:21 PM
WapEmail. Not time based; It is data base!

13-10-2004, 12:21 PM
Back when vodafone live was setup it was time based but they've changed it now.The costs of doing anything on vodafone life, wap, gprs etc is the amount of data you receive!

13-10-2004, 12:32 PM
thanks for that. i swear i used the same smtp and pop settings for vodafone, i just cannot receive email. i could send it thou from the client. it was a motorola v525 which now is gone. i also tried my Clear Net pop and smtp addresses, receive and sending does not work. i think once if i used smtp.vodafone.net.nz or the like i could send voda emails from the client and if i used smtp.vodafone.net.nz and i changed my email addresss to my Clear Net I could send out, but i could not use smtp.clear.net.nz and send out.

just the man, i wanted to speak to, what is the trendiest cellphone in asia? just curious that asia are the leaders in that market. nokia? nokia which brand? is there yet a model that replaces the 8210/8250 yet? i see there are the 5xxx, 7xxx series what about the 8xxx series?

13-10-2004, 12:42 PM
oh yeah .. one time i set it out with that url u gave me. when i click email inbox it somehows redirects me to Vodafone Live. so i am not using the inbox ...

13-10-2004, 12:47 PM
hey is wap time based, meaning if the phone is a bit old. i had a 6210 a while back (still now). it does not support grps.

13-10-2004, 02:04 PM
8xxx series is no longer available

Probably nokia 2650/nokia 3120.im actually sellling them !!lol!

13-10-2004, 02:07 PM
If the phone does not support gprs Then there's a wap setting for it.Its at the vodafone website.I just can't find it any where at the moment.Anyway.If you ring vodafone and tell them your number they should send you the settings for your phone

13-10-2004, 02:10 PM
Trendious cellphone?Lol.

Umm probably sony ericsson s700i at the moment.I have offical release date it will be release here in november Rrp$ 1599nz.
I can get it hong kong for cheaper

Hmm..Nokia 6630 is due to release soon its the competitor of s700i.its a 3g phone with 1.3 megapixel same as s700i.
Samsung released a 1.5gb mobile phone but only available in korea at the moment.

It depends how much you willing to spend.
Give me an email to ronaldlam@paradise.net.nz
If u want to talk to me about it!

13-10-2004, 02:11 PM
Any data you receive is Not time base.Wap is still data receive base

13-10-2004, 02:13 PM
My dad told me that he saw in the hong kong newspaper everybody lining up in the sony ericsson hk service centre to get their phone fix.My dad suggest sony ericsson phones are likely to stuff up.
But from my supplier's perspective. She says that they put too much stuff on phones thats why its likely to stuff up.
The lesson is.Choose a thing that is less likely to stuff up
Nokia 6230 has a bit of a problem and im using it at the moment.I upgraded the software which was a bit better but gprs often freeze.I use msn messenger on gprs.

TAke a look here on all nokia mobile phones http://www.nokia.com.hk/nokia/0,,39399,00.html

13-10-2004, 02:14 PM
i kinda like nokia 3120/2600/2650.

13-10-2004, 02:16 PM
A complaint from my supplier on nokia 7200.The lcd screen is small and the phone is ugly.her friend sold it straight after she bought it which was interesting.
Nokia 8310 has hardware problems.

13-10-2004, 02:16 PM
i had nokia 8250.Its the best phone nokia made. Not even one problem and lasts the longest.Nokia 8310 was the worse phone as it stuffed up mega!!

13-10-2004, 04:56 PM
thanks for all the info!! really appreciated.
all i want is color and be able to email. i also want triband. don;t use the camera at all ... don't know how some pple can use the web on such a small thing..
the 6610 looks nice but is old. the 6630 looks a bit ovvy.
the flip be it the 7200? and the 2xxx is ugly.
the one that u are using now the 6xxx series looks alright.
i bet you if they had something like the nokia blue out, neat, small, bug free, color and a cam at the back would be a star. they should bring back the 8xxx series back. u could also put the speaker at the edge of the phone thus the screen can be pushed larger or just to make the phone smaller.

13-10-2004, 05:07 PM
8xxx series is very old.
Nokia 3120 has colour, pxt and an email Client. Its triband.Let me go take a look if it has an email client.
I wish all cellphone was perfect when they release it but **** just happens.
Apparently the 2xxx series and the 3xxx series is the cheapest with colour

13-10-2004, 05:40 PM
they dont have IR or bluetooth right?
I had a look online, it does not mention anything about email clients.

13-10-2004, 06:06 PM
No bluetooth of infrared for nokia 3120.Checking the others at the moment.yeah 3120 has no email client

13-10-2004, 06:11 PM
nokia 6220 has infrared, email client ,camera. No bluetooth though

13-10-2004, 06:19 PM
looks like the ones i meantion doesn't have email clients.Nokia 5140 would be another to look at and nokia 7610

13-10-2004, 06:20 PM
Nokia 6xxx,7xxx,5xxx series should have email clients in them

13-10-2004, 06:28 PM
Nokia 3220 is quite cool.lol.You can use your hands sway your hands up in the world an draw a world and the phone transmit some kind of light and will show the word out in thin air.cool!

13-10-2004, 09:59 PM
hey that is neat ying.;)
I am now staying with Nokia. I've tried the Sony Z5 and the Moto V525 nah ....
I would wait sometime yet .. spend sometime with my old phone. Is that the phones now tend to be a bit larger than the v small ones we had a few yrs back? what do u expect from the 3g technology? its just a label right, meaning it would be called 3g but no big thing is gonna happen, it would still take time to implement the so called hyper bandwidth speeds, the video conferencing handsets etc.. i think its neat if you have a pda or laptop with it but by the handset alone its restricted by the nature of the small handset, small keypad .. well down the road they can implement voice recognition lol.

13-10-2004, 10:08 PM
that makes me think, since i dont use the phone for business or urgent emails. why would i need the email client? ple can text me .. it cost less to use. :)

13-10-2004, 10:20 PM
must confess the 6220 is what is natural to myself.
the 6108 is different thou (not for me). looks interesting, a little flip? a pen stylus pointer?
the 5xxx are rubber crap which i would never touch.
the 7xxx series is alright like the 7250,t he 76xx is not my style ;)

13-10-2004, 10:37 PM
as the 6230 has some issues. what does the 6220 have? i think i really like the 6220. the 6230 has a mem card thing which i dont need. the 6600 is pricey but does look not too bad ...
or else yeah i could wait a bit and see what the new ones bring.

14-10-2004, 02:01 AM
Nokia 6220 is the previous version from the 6230.Its mostly the same really but 6220 has a shorter life than 6230.Yep No mem card.
I wonder if 6220 is available in hk.I know you can't buy it in nz.Let u know in the morning of what 6220 difference is as oppose to 6230.

You could wait a bit and see what it brings out
Yeah 3g just the video conferencing and faster gprs

A girl wanted me to get her a sony ericsson z1010.Is a waste of money.I charged him $960.lol

14-10-2004, 10:36 AM
Oh yeah thats rite. The nokia 6220 camera quality is slightly less better than the nokia 6230.Polyphonic ringtone sounds more realistic with the nokia 6230 than 6220.Thats all really.Everything else is mostly the same

14-10-2004, 04:14 PM
I'll wait some time and see what happens later and with the prices. I prob get it in HK when I go back there next time.

The 6220 is ok. Thou I prob would like the 6600 better. Is this a large phone?
The 6108? looks interesting, u have experience of the touch screen and the pen stylus.
The other one 6xxs - the messenger series with a full-key keypad - u had experience with the keypad?

just about the mem card thing. can one still run java software without the mem card on their phone? meaning running the file when connected to a laptop?? or can one download it via grps? so the mem card is only needed if u are wanting a backup sorta?

So yeah prob down to these two models. Just have a nz life at the mo, text, call, text, text ..

14-10-2004, 04:20 PM
I the nokia 6600 is quite fat down the middle. Its available in nz.you can go check it out!

I've only tried 6225 and nokia 6230.Hmm I wanna buy nokia 3220.lol.I have two sim cards.
The java software are automatically downloaded into the phone's memory. You cannot install java software in the memory cards.YOu can only store video,ringtones,mp3s,pictures in the memory card
