Allblack

This is sad.

Whilst I'm here, I'll ask a question that's been bugging me for sometime, unrelated to computers but so's this thread!

Who can tell me what the difference is in the US between:

Police
Sheriffs
State Troopers,

and to a lesser extent Marshalls.

For example, I was watching Reno911 (can that shirt pop open any more??), and saw the plaque Reno Sheriffs Department.

Why aren't they Reno POLICE Department?

Anyone know?

Winston001
14-10-2004, 09:54 AM
Ok Allblack. Tough question. I'm no expert but I'll do my best and give a link.

There are estimated to be 21,143 federal, state, and local law enforcement bodies in the USA.

Police: Municipal and county. The boss is appointed by the city or county. Can't go outside the boundary.

State Police (Troopers): belong to the State government and cover the whole state. Includes state buildings, traffic enforcement, fish and game etc. No jurisdictional problems about moving from city to county. They cover the whole lot.

Sherriff: A policeman in a county. But he is also a politician because he is elected by the people. But otherwise runs a police department (called the Sherriff's Office) just like everywhere else.

Marshalls: Elite federal officers who protect judges, track down federal fugitives, look after witness protection, transport prisoners, and seize criminal assets. Busy boys.

Highway Patrol: Smokey: Federal boys on the Interstates and US highways. As opposed to local roads.

FBI: Federal police who chase crimes which cross state boundaries.

We could go on. Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco, and Firearms. Immigration Service. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Drug Enforcement Agency. These are all types of police services.

The problem for American law enforcement is the splintered nature of these competing organisations. They have to fight for funding, and importance. Thus cooperation which we in NZ would simply expect, cannot be assumed. Eg. nobody likes FBI who are seen as bullies, cherry-picking high profile cases to enhance the agency.

14-10-2004, 12:27 PM
Awesome, thanks for your reply.

Still a bit confused about the difference between police and sheriffs. If both are responsible for the city/county, who determines the scope of their responsibilities?

I note your comment about the "politician", however this doesn't explain (to me) what the differences are......

Sorry if this was answered and I missed it.

Cheers
Tim

Hello you have just dialled the Psychiatric Hot-Line.

If you are obsessive, compulsive.... press 1 repeatedly.

If you are co-dependant.... please ask someone else to press 2.

If you have multiple personalities.... press 3, 4, 5, & 6.

If you are schizophrenic.... listen very carefully, your little voice will tell you which number to press.

If you are paranoid.... we know who you are and what you're after, just hold on the line while we have the number traced.

If you are manic depressive.... it does not matter which number you press, nobody will answer you.

Excuse me chaps and chapesses - Allblack and I are having a conversation here :D

Sherriff versus Police. Think of it this way. If your Mayor and Council owned the Wellington Police Department, they would appoint the local District Commander of Police. And fire him if they liked.

If instead Wellington had a Sherriff's Department, then the District Commander would be called the Sherriff. He would stand for election just like the Mayor and Councillors. It would be up to the voters as to whether he got the job. And he'd keep it until the next election. So he'd need to be popular rather than just a good police administrator.

Both are police. No difference. But you cannot have both in the same place.

Cities and large towns tend to have Police Departments controlled by the city council. Small towns and counties have Sherriffs instead. Probably for historical reasons.

Allblack

Hey All Black, we saw those Waikato wimps off with a, well a wimper as was right and proper. Shame we had an off day against the LS's, but hey, it'll make victory next year all the sweeter.

BTW, can I use the RFU's IP like this, can All Black for that matter, will they sue?

.Hello, i have just dialled the Psychiatric Hot-Line.

I have pressed 1,3,4,5,&6 repeatedly, and just for personal reasons i have got my specail friend to press "2" on my behalf. Allthough the doctors say i'm ready to press 2 all by myself now, i don't listen to the doctors. The voices know better. The voices know that the number was displayed at the "help" centre, and recorded by the phone corporations for later use. This is no concern as the thought police are all ready on their way because i've blocked my thoughts with the foil on my head. They don't permit this. However, what i'm ringing for, is to discuss........

No, i shan't bother.

:-)

BTW, i know i should be asleep, but the server shouldn't, and seems rather slow this morning.
......and it was time for my first post.
