View Full Version : Can't see some images in forums

30-09-2004, 08:22 PM
XP Pro, SP2,
I'm a keen fisherman that uses the "fishing.net.nz" forums
Now some people post picures that I can see, no problem, but for other pictures, all I see is a red square, saying image, but no picture. Others can see these pictures, but not me. This was happening pre-SP2.
What's preventing me from seeing those pictures but others can see them and how do I change my settings to see them?

Links to a couple of the pictures in question would be useful.

Potentially they are images that are outdated and the links are no longer valid, other users may be seeing cached versions from their own cache or that of their ISP.

Here is one reason.
Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer

Thanks for the reply. I usually use Opera, but the results are the same with IE6, Opera and Firefox.
WTF - Here's a link to the thread. I can see a picture of an orange squid, but on the the next letter, the photo, I can't see.

Strangely, I can see some photos (including my own postings) but not others.
Johnboy - great link. Tried the settings but still the same result.

Ya gotta be a member, and register I shall not.

Good luck.

Do we all have to register before we can view that page? :p :D

Are you sure that the photos are still on the webpage and that others can still see them when you cannot?

To the last 2 repliers:- sorry about that, you do have to register to see certain threads. That's ok if you're a keen fisho. Incidentally, it was voted in the top 10 world fishing sites. Many of NZ's top fishing professionals and a whole bunch of keen recreactional, are active on this forum.

It's still the case, Susan. Some people can see all the pictures, I can see some, but not all. Strange.

Check and see if your firewall is not blocking images?/.
Allow the site in your firewall settings

What browser are you using

Wakey wakey...

>>> I usually use Opera, but the results are the same with IE6, Opera and Firefox.

Johnboy has a point - have you got a firewall with adblocking enabled? That will prevent small images being shown but not bigger ones.

Darn it, I'll have to sign up and see for myself. :D

OK, I'm a member. :p :D

Right, this will make you happy - I can't see the images apart from the squid either. The reason for that is because it looks like the images are on a private photo hosting site that you probably need a password to access.

I am wondering how you know that other people can view the images? At a guess I would say that they have a password given them by the owner of the photo.

It must be a setting on your computer i can see three images on that page the squid the next one below is a lure and the other one further down the page is a lure with a marking pen.
is this correct.??

Wakey wakey indeed, 8:50am is very very early, and I had not finished my first coffee yet.
I signed up and can see all three images on that site.
first (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/02sab/logs/aug10/media/squid_600.jpg)
second (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/Kerren/lures1.jpg)
third (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/Kerren/ac_lure.jpg)

It would seem that you guys are having prob's getting images from img.photobucket.com.

Right... then it is obviously a setting on Fishb8 and my computer that is preventing the images showing. Have tried three browsers with the same results.

It can't be the Hosts file as I have disabled that.

I don't have Java on my PC at the moment - do you two?

01-10-2004, 11:17 AM
Yes java here

Ha, I have got them now! :D

It was Outpost blocking them for me. I disabled all of the options under the Plug-ins tab and got the images displaying after that. Not sure which one is doing the actual blocking but never mind, at least I know where to look.

Fishb8, check out your firewall, ad-blocker and other utilities until you find the culprit. It will be one of those, most likely the one you have forgotten all about. :D

Hi - You guys are so helpful. I use Outpost as my firewall and it makes sense, that if all 3 browsers won't let me see the image, then there's a common problem. However, I've disabled all the plug-ins and no change. Disabled Outpost and still can't see the images. As you said, there must be a setting on my PC that is doing the blocking.
Will work on it. Thanks.

When you disabled the plugins/shut down Outpost, did you do a hard refresh of the page? Hold down CTRL then press F5.

Watching the traffic in Outpost I think it is the DNS cache setting as I stopped that service, did a hard refresh and got the images.

Yes, it is definitely the DNS cache plugin setting that was blocking the images for me.

I have no idea what it does or what it is for but a search on Google brings up quite a few pages of info to study. If a hard refresh doesn't do the trick for you you may need to look at other apps and settings. Hopefully someone else will have some suggestions to try.

I am pleased you brought this topic up as I have had similar isolated problems but did not realise it was Outpost blocking the pages so you have done me a favour today. :-)

Tight lines. ;-)

Hi Susan - All the plug-ins are disabled and I've just done a re-boot. Voila, I can see the images. I'll re-install the plug-ins, sequentially, leaving the DNS cache (whatever that is) until last.

Hi Susan - This has been bugging me for ages. I've known that other people can see all the images and that I can see SOME of the images and haven't been able to figure out why.
The forum's administrator couldn't help me either, in fact, his were some of the images I couldn't see.
I'm so pleased about this as other problems I've asked help for have remained unresolved or I've found the problem myself. I only ask when I'm totally bu**ered.
Big thank you everybody.

Excellent! Glad to hear you solved it, Fishb8. :-)

Re-phrase. Glad to hear the problem's been solved. You guys solved it.
