I suspect it's a faulty PSU - when switching on, no POST, but fan is running OK. How do I confirm this other than swapping with a known good PSU, (as I don't have a known good PSU to swap)?

Change the MOLEX connection to the hard drive if u have a spare one, coming from the PSU. See if it boots.Or change the hdd power and pull the other plugs out of the other devices. See if it boots.

If you have CD or DVD do the LED's come on when you switch on?

It's my friend's PC and it is miles away from my house. What if the LED of the CD comes on and what if it doesn't come on?

Thanks

How old is the computer? The battery may need changing.

If the LEDS on the CD/DVD turn on at least you know power is working to a point .

What is it?? P2/P3/P4??/Other?

If P4, normally the system wont run, if the 4 pin ATX 12v connection (from the psu), isnt plugged into the ATX 12v connector on the mobo mobo, to deal with the power to the CPU.

BUT then I dont think the fan would be spinning either. It would be completely dead.

Nothing would be going. (I maybe wrong). I've never tried leaving this 4 pin connector off.
