FAQ #21 - Cannot open email attachments in Outlook Express

Originally written by Susan B

When you upgrade to Outlook Express 6 or install Windows XP Service Pack 1 you may begin getting a similar message to one of the following when opening email:

Error: OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail

or

OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail.

These messages are generated when a security option in Outlook Express (OE) 6.0 has been enabled. That option denies access to email attachments that could be malicious but it also inconveniently denies access to legitimate email attachments.

The solution to this problem is to do the following:

In Outlook Express go to Options | Tools | Security Tab. If there is a tick in the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" remove the tick and click OK.

Having done that you need to then remember to take the usual virus precautions before opening any attachments. That is, save the attachment to your hard drive and scan it with an anti-virus program that has up-to-date virus definitions.

More information on the OE email attachment feature can be found at Microsoft's website (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q329570).
