no linux gui
command line only

have done usermod -G fred peter as root
the etc/group file reads as follows for fred's group membership

when logged in as fred nad issuing the "groups" command
returns a group membership of fred only

I have have loged off as fred and root rebooted and the group membership remains as fred when loging in as fred.(etc/group says fred's group membership should be fred and peter).

what am I missing

newgrp (when used as fred) asks for a password, I have tried both roots and peters password both return an invalid password message

I would like fred to have group membership of both fred and peter

You have made peter a member of the fred group. Try adding fred to the peter group.

It's just the dumb computer doing exactly what you tell it to do, not what you want it to do.

I've always "disliked" the man pages because they don't put examples in. They are great for exact syntax. If you know the semantics. :D
