Hi Folks. A grey area here, knowledgewise. I have a Pentium 3, 996 MHz with USB 1. Is there any way that I can install a USB 2 hub or card that will not default back to 1???

If you install a USB 2 PCI Card (see the likes of Dick Smith), then you should still have USB2 speeds without it reverting back to USB1.

You may not have full speeds though, depending on your hardware, as some bottlenecks could hinder performance.

A USB2 Hub on a USB1 port will still, however, act as USB1.

The simple answer is YES.

Check out using a PCI card in particular.

Being as I don't have a crystal ball (like Godfather) and don't actually know what Operating system you use how can I really tell?

I know that I have installed a PCI - USB card on an AMD supported motherboard and the o/s was Win98SE. This was a PCI - USB2 card.

Bear in mind that I have some fairly late hardware and USB support is not enabled until I use SP1 for WinXPPro.

And a USB1 device plugged into a USB2 port will still run as USB1.

Mike.

Hi Growly, Elephant & Mike. Information appreciated.
Elephant - re "Being as I don't have a crystal ball (like Godfather) and don't actually know what Operating system you use how can I really tell?" - sorry about that. Running XP Pro. Thanks.

And there is a fair chance that if you use a USB 1.1 cable on a USB 2.0 port it will revert to 1.1. ;-) It's fussy.
