I'm sure I read in one of the PC World magazines yet can cannot find it of sofware that would extensively test the hardware. As I have a XP PC that is randomly crashing with a report of HARDWARE FAILURE.

Thanks,
J.

Any other info with that error message Alan? Was it Memtest or System Mechanic that was mentioned?

Think he would be thinking more along the lines of a stress test or burnin test.

System mechanic just cleans out files.

Personally i would take other steps to diagnose a hardware issue,The program above is what PC company techs used to run on machines..........

Maybe you are looking for Sisoft SANDRA.
This will do an extensive test. It does have a burn in test.
You might also think about Memtest86 just to test memory.

I would try Memtest first. Have you enabled S.M.A.R.T. on hard dives?

So what do you use in the way of software diagnose?

In general I just replace and test hardware. Unfortunately not all PressF1 members have spare hardware lying about.

Not that I really expect an answer from you. Not a sensible one anyway. Going down the garden now to eat worms or check on fairies.

I don't think that motherboard (Pentium II) doesn't support S.M.A.R.T
