View Full Version : looking for a network monitor

I'm running a small wired network of winXP pc's (2 laptops, 2 desktops), through a hardware switch and router. I'm wanting to keep an eye on network traffic (don't need fancy bells/whistles) so am looking for a decent freeware network monitor. Any recommendations??

an older free version of winroute,no idea if you can find it though.

I found Ethersnoop (freeware) here (http://www.arechisoft.com) and am giving it a go: initial indications are that it will do the job - doesn't appear to offer host resolution unfortunately, but does give full packet breakdown of some of the more common protocols.

Have a look at these (http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=firewalls), there should be one that fits your needs, most will exceed them. Some will run off a CD or floppy.

Thanks Murray - those suggestions look like they'd be exactly what I'd be needing... if I was running Linux. Unfortunately, for windows XP the choices appear much more limited.

Don't give up, Spartacus, Google on some of the names with "XP" or "Windows". There are often ports made to Other OSs. :D
