View Full Version : OT - Polytech assignment - PressF1 help needed

28-07-2004, 01:12 AM
Hi guys,

this is a bit of an unusual request but I labelled this post as OT just to be on the safe side.

I am currently studying a diploma in Airport Operations.

As a course assignment I need to collect some information, tabulate the results and then make a few summaries from the data collected.

Now they gave us some data but it's way to BORING for me.

So if it wasn't too much trouble I was wondering if some F1'ers could...

a) Post your machine specs, right down to your speaker setup.
b) Your age, but not to be intrusive just note which age category you fall under.

1) under 18
2) 18 - 25
3) 26 - 35
4) 36 - 45
5) 46 - 55
6) 56 or above

c) What is the primary use of your PC, gaming, word processsing, video editing/authoring, combination of the above etc.

I need at least 50 responses... if that's at all possible... but I'll take whatever number I can get.

Just to get the ball rolling I will start with my own specs.

Intel P4 2.8(E)Ghz Prescott CPU
Asus P4P800-SE mobo
1GB SD DDR 400 Dual channel RAM
Samsung x52x32x52 CDRW drive
Samsung x16 DVD ROM drive
Pioneer dual speed x8x4 DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW drive
Seagate 120GB SATA hard drive
Gigabyte ATi 9600XT 128MB Graphics card
SB Live DE 5.1 sound card
Creative Inspire 5200 5.1 Surround sound speakers
15" Acer AL511 LCD monitor

Hi buddy , how's about a link to a form or something to fill in boxes etc to give you the info you need . Glad to help out , just need some more specific/ easy guidance about what is needed ... will we be privy to the results of the data collected? Good luck :)

28-07-2004, 01:24 AM
Maybe im a crooked man,but i would just make it up.Take all of 15 minutes.

28-07-2004, 01:29 AM
...now there's some lateral thinking ... :)

Some members might be a tad reluctant to post their computers private details in a thread for all to scrutinise and comment on. May I suggest you post a throw away email addy that give people the opportunity to email replies :)

> a) Post your machine specs, right down to your speaker setup.

Which one do you want the spec's on, posting spec's on multiple machines owned would be valid?

> b) Your age, but not to be intrusive just note which age category you fall under.

This is a multi-choice question isn't it. Your age in years, how old you feel, what age you act and what sex[?] ;)

All you need to do is post what your system specs are... use my post as a guide and that should be simple enough.

Unfortunately I cannot make up the data as I need to give references as to where I got the information from. Doing it in this manner will allow me to use the link in F1 as a reference for whoever is reading the report I have written.

28-07-2004, 01:45 AM

I would think that if you don't want to post your system specs then don't.

I am asking for members to volunteer the information.

If you are at all uncomfortable with any responses I am asking for then don't reply.

I am just trying to complete a task. This is an easier alternative than having to set up a questionaire (this is the other option I have) to ask people on the street about their system information.

If my request is too much then I apologise and please disregard my request.

Uhmm, slightly tongue in cheek. I was more alluding to people, perhaps, being uncomfortable with posting their age on the forum. I personally don't have any problem, just thought it might give you more results.

Yes, I know I'm going Off Topic on an Off Topic - but maniacs on computers at this hour of the morning are surely allowed simple questions...
So what, for |heaven's sake, has this got to do with a diploma in Airport Operations?
(No doubt my helicopter pilot relative will be equally intrigued when he visits tomorrow - but his airport operations around the Southern Alps don't come with capital letters - and most of the the places he lands would be flattered to be called airports)
So is this a study to analyse whether whether those of us sitting at home by our computers are capable of uniting in a terrorist operation to bring down a jumbo jet, or create chaos at a major airport - or just something your tutor devised to keep your brain cells nimble?

...so how did the assignment go Chief? ?:|

04-08-2004, 03:58 AM
Good question, KatiMike
I'm still wondering what everyone's computer specs & age groups had to do with airport studies..?

04-08-2004, 04:18 AM
Sorry, chiefnz, ignore that post...
I merely remembered I got no specific answer last week.
Re-reading the thread reminds me that surveys are part of many kinds of studies.
Blame it on the middle- of- the- night syndrome..

04-08-2004, 04:24 AM
Well the info's good thanks guys.

Spoke to the tutor the other day and he's quite keen on seeing what I come up with as far as conclusions is concerned.

At the moment I will probably break it down to something like what are the most common combinations of use... gaming, word processing etc and will probably couple the specs (in a general fashion I won't be putting specific info in the final report)

The main aim is to develop inferences (PC term for assumptions) about the data.

So it would be something like...

20% of the respondants surveyed had a CPU speed of ***, ***RAM etc and the main use was blah blah blah....

10% had more than 2 PC's in their home.

The good news is I have enough data to get things collated into a decent report....

The aim of the paper was research.... basically collect data then develop theories about what was gathered.

I understand the confusion... my colleagues and I were also abit hazy as to what all this research had to do with an aiport.... the answer we were given was business research and the interpretation of data and information to make decisions. Although the key to this exercise was actually gathering the data. A decision made is only as good as the information on which it is based.

But as someone previously stated is there really ever any point to an assignment... half the time it's some weird idea dreamed up by a person for no apparent reason at all.

Thanks again for all your help.
