With current debates on Firefox/Opera etc versus Internet Explorer, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at PC World for July 1995.

It should also be remembered that in 1995, web browsing was still relatively new, with FTP having been the main file transfer and browsing protocoll.

There were also quaintly named internet tools such as:
Archie, Veronica, Gopher, WAIS, Jughead, as well as Telnet, Email send and receive, and Telnet.

So here are the top six browsers of July 1995

Cello 1.01a

Internet Chameleon

Mosaic in a Box 2.1

NCSA Mosaic2.009a

Netscape Navigator 1.0

Winweb 1.0 A2.3

.... and the winner was ..... Netscape 1.0.
Pros were top-notch performance, state of the art security, excellent navigation tools.

Cons: None

Internet Explorer was still below the horizon :)

Thanks for sharing that piece of news. I have used Netscape since 1995 and have always found it to be a great browser. I know these days people are preferring Firefox, Opera, etc, but so far I have had no reason to change from what I think is still an excellent browser.

Not completely as MS bought Mosaic and turned it into IE.

And I still use NCSA Telnet. :D It's so quick and easy to shift files to/from a computer with all the software needed on a single floppy. You could do it on a 360k floppy. ;-)
