I am using a Dell dimension 4600i which has a CD/DVD drive that the 'Device Manager' identifies as, 'HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC 4481B'
System Information tells me the same. A search of the Dell web site turned up nothing, a Google search only found data bases of drives that were compatible with various software. I have drawn a blank! Can someone please tell me where I can learn about this drive? Vince

Does Everest Home Edition have any more info?

Try unscrewing the drive and looking on the label. Works 100% of the time.

Google clearly identifies it as an LG (Goldstar) drive.

I strongly suspect it's a Hitachi/Lucky Goldstar GCC 4418B. Google with just that type code "gcc4418B".

It is a program that can pull out various bits of information about your system - hardware and software. It may be able to provide the manufacturer for your drive. You can read more and download it from here (http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1〈=en&pageid=1).

The GCC 4480B is listed at the above link, and it seems very likely that the 4481B will be a similar drive.

They are "Generic" in the manner that they appear to be unbranded for use by other manufacturers/suppliers. Therefore they may not have a direct equivalent on the actual makers website. Hitachi are also suggested by some as another possible maker, and in reality the drive could be made by a number of companies to a common specification?

Yes, I just ran a Google search with just "gcc4418B". It turned up 117 results compared with the 71 that I got last night. I will follow up on that later. Thanks Vince.

I think you are right Godfather, I found the exact same drive, full name, made by Hitachi, and LG Electronics.

Yes, I can second that motion (not that it needs it) -

Computers at school, all the laptops have those. They are CDRWs and DVD ROMS as far as I know. Interesting.

(Much like the Atapi drivers, eh?)

I have found it!
It is made by LG.
Full name is ; LG HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4418B
Hope this helps.
Also does anyone know where to get software to allow the same drive to record to DVD+R blank discs?
It keeps saying 'no writable disc in drive' :badpc:

Your drive may only be a cd-writer, not dvd writer. check your specs.
it could just be a combo - cd-writer / dvd drive/player

I have been using this drive for a year now and have no reason to think it can write to DVDs.
