Five countries send 99 per cent of spam. Can you guess which ones?

Five countries are responsible for 99 per cent of spam email sent around the world, according to a study by anti-spam company Commtouch. Commtouch analysed hundreds of millions of unsolicited emails and said about 55 per cent of spam messages originated in the US, while slightly more than 73 per cent of them referred recipients to websites hosted in China. China, South Korea, the US, Russia and Brazil host more than 99 per cent of all websites mentioned in spam, according to Commtouch. Not surprisingly offers of drugs, particularly Viagra, accounted for about one-third of global spam messages sent in the first half of 2004. Pitches for drugs.....

According to an Australian commentator at the recent anti-spam workshop, 14% of spam "originating" in the Japan-Pacific region comes from New Zealand and only two percent from Australia.

"And..." as my mother used to say "...the band played 'Believe it if you Like'."

Does "origin" of spam mean "apparent origin" and therefore reflect not the presence of spammers byt the presence of unguarded systems that can be used in one way or another by spammers located elsewhere?

It's a very "unscientific" impression but when I've run a "proxy checker", I have found Brazil accounts for a surprisingly high percentage of systems available for anonymous proxy use.

Anyone done a more systematic survey on this?
