Wife just bought a new NEC notebook with 2.4Ghz P4 processor. Seems a bit slow, so I checked the actual processor speed.
Running at 1600MHz! (underclocked by 33%)
I feel we've been conned....any comments?

One from Noel Leemings? Either way, take it back and demand a refund. It's never too late.

If its using a speed stepping mobile processor, then the speed will step down automatically when its not needed in order to minimise power and heat.

On battery power it will usually always be stepped down.

Thanks GF, it's as as you said, processor slows down when idling. Steps up to 2.4GHz when needed, even on battery power.

cheers

I know what you mean Neddy. I use an HP nx9005 with Athlon 2.0Ghz M processor (or thereabouts). Love it.

But it was significantly slower out of the box than our HP D530 desktop, although newer. Mind you, slow is relative. I cleaned a P2 the other day which was a healthy reminder of how fast modern processors really are.

Anyway, the only thing I can put it down to is that laptop hard drives spin more slowly than desktops. Once I accepted that, no problem. And it isn't really slow by any rational standard. :D

A good point about the HD, which spins at only 4200rpm. That and only 256MB of ram makes it load programs slower than my desktop with equivalent CPU
Can't complain tho, it came at a very good price :)
