View Full Version : Linux help - starting the GUI

Today I installed Debian Linux (why? cause it was on the coverdisk of the latest APC mag), and after the massive (and confusing) install (Mandrake install was so simple) it just leaves me at a login prompt. So I type in my username/password and I'm just left with a command prompt. How do I tell it to start a GUI? I know there were options during the installation to set up desktop managers etc., which I worked through, but now I'm stuck. I thought maybe I'd missed something during the install (or hit the wrong key/button), so I've reinstalled it twice, but all with the same result.

Or should I just go back to nice simple Mandrake? :D

Well that worked... kinda :(

after a whole heap of text scrolling up the screen, and a flicker or two, I get a message "No screen found" ?:|

X hasn't been configured then. A quick google tells me the command for Debian to run the X configuration program is:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Let us know how you get on :)

well that allowed me to reconfigure everything...

> Let us know how you get on :)

But it didn't work - I tried all sorts of different combinations for things, but every time I startx I get the message No Screen or whatever it says.

And I can't figure out how (if its even possible) to mount my windows drive to save a copy of the log file so I can post it in here... my WXP drive is NTFS, so that might be part of the problem...

Help please! :D

Mike.

What have I done wrong? I tried to follow all the instructions when I reconfigured X, so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

Mike.

PS I modified it a little - everytime it says "[ B ]" it was actually without spaces, but that just tried to make it bold so I had to add the spaces :^O

And to add to that, my system is as follows:

2.2g intel
160gb HDD (Windows XP, NTFS)
20gb HDD (that's where I put Linux)
512mb RAM
64mb GeForce4 MX440
USB optical mouse

anything else?

I think this is your problem Mike, your XFree86 version doesn't recognise your graphic card. You can download a newer version and install it, but it will be all from command line only seeing you can't get X to run.

You can see your graphic card is not listed at all. :(

Debian is well known as the Linux diehards distro (no flames please). Unless you really want to learn about Linux, I would stick to Mandrake or one of the more friendly distro's.

BTW, what on earth are you doing in Linus's basement :)

Well I've had a look at RH, Mandrake, Knoppix, and Lycoris, and I wanted to have a look at one of the "diehard" distros to see the difference... I think I've found it :D

LOL I set that location when PressF1 v2 was in beta (I think?) and for some reason, even though I've changed my location in the settings, it still shows that location when I'm replied to :) bizarre :)

Hmmm... :(

That's weird - its not a new card at all - Surely GF4's have been around for a few years now? And this copy of Debian was on the June 2004 edition of APC mag...

How do I get a newer version in there and install it from the command line? I'll have to download it via Windows and somehow get it onto my linux partition...

Maybe I'll have a hunt for my mandrake CDs again :) Just there was just SO much stuff included in this Debian one (7 CDs worth).

Hi Mike,

A few things come to mind:
use a command-line browser such as Lynx or Links2
links2 debian.org
lynx debian.org

Or if you know the URL of the file you want:
wget http://www.nvidia.com/README

I would suggest you grab a copy of a Live CD (Knoppix is good, debian-based) and when you're in Knoppix mount your / partition and copy /etc/X11/XF86Config from the CD to your / partition in /etc/X11......

Otherwise you can always use xf86config
And lastly:
You want to try editing the XF86Config file to use:
driver = vesa
rather than:
driver = nv
If you download the binaries from nvidia.com for your distro then FOLLOW THE README and change it to:
driver = nvidia

I'd suggest you edit /etc/X11/XF86Config first and change your card to use Vesa drivers and take it from there :-)

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions Chill,

I copied the Knoppix XF86Config-4 file over, changed "driver = nv" to "driver = vesa" and that worked :), but now my mouse doesn't ;) ah well. KDE version included was 2.2.2, so that's old as well.

I downloaded the driver from NVidia and tried to run that, but it said my Kernel differed from the one in the package and that I'd have to download an update (which I couldn't do cause I can't connect to the net from Linux yet - have to get drivers sorted), or compile the kernel from source files, which the Debian DVD didn't include, so that didn't work either.

But I did get in though :) further than I got before LOL. I think I might now just go and reinstall Mandrake or RH - There's heaps of fiddling I'm going to have to do just to get Debian working for me, and I'd rather just power on in and give it a try when I know more what I'm doing (in a few years I suppose :D)

Thanks Chill & Jen C :^O

Right :)

I've got Mandrake 9.1 installed now :D And I followed your instructions, Chill, to get the NVidia drivers installed, and that's all working (I know that's working because now a big NVIDIA logo appears right before KDE starts loading ;))

Now I'm back in Windows finding out which of my CDs has my winmodem drivers for linux on it :) and I just found it, so I'm off back into linux to see if I can get the modem to go.

Thanks Chill,

Mike.

Brilliant, that's great to hear :-)

If you've got the wrong drivers, then download:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz
Open a terminal window and type:
gunzip scanModem.gz
./scanModem

Then you'll want the info from the First txt file it creates :-)

Hope this helps

Bah!

The driver I had was for the wrong kernel. I searched the net for a driver that would work, and the only one I found was at Linuxant.com, and it would only allow up to 14.4k - I have to pay to get 56k. So the internet from Linux is on hold until I either fork out to get 56k (not likely), or buy a modem that'll work with Linux straight off :)
