This is a real oddball one.

When using a laptop with XP Home, certain applications won't work unless it is connected to either my home or work network. Operating it standalone or with a dial-up internet connection I can't run
MS Word
PhotoExpress
Outlook
and a couple of others.

All they do is close with the message offering to send the error to Microsoft.

Any ideas anyone?

noticed that with some WMA files today had to be online to d/load the licences or some such nonsense to play them

can you post any error messages?

Error Message reads:

"Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We apologise for the inconvenience." Then it asks if I would like to send the report to Microsoft, which I have done a few times.

The same message appears for other affected programs.

The info collated for forwarding to Microsoft is far too long to include here.

The problem disappears as soon as I plug into a functioning network.

Very strange, I think.

Any help appreciated.

You could perhaps try reinstalling the programs whilst not connected to your network.

This sounds like the stupid Windows and Office activation thing where as you have removed the laptop from the network it thinks there has been too great a change in the system. There was a reporter who hopped on a flight after loading the latest Office and found having undocked his laptop Office refused to run. He was a very unhappy chappy.

Thanks Tommy

Tried this one. No go. I even upgraded to Office 2003 and loaded it without a network connection. Same problem keeps happening though.

Sounds kind of like the problem I'm having. Any ideas on how to resolve it?

Nope. Did it clean and well away from a network connection.
