Hiya

I have done some RAW format passport photo(s) down sized, going to print at Warehouse Stationeary for 60c 6x4 inch.

So I thought about printing some other pix. I checked them more thoroughly, they were shot at JPG Fine 2.5MB (the second highest setting). I opened up Photoshop 6.0 and it says 72 pixel/inch under image size. 72??! Documetn size is however 54x36cm.

I checked the RAW files and its 300. Does this mean I need to shoot RAW to get a printout each time? Its off a Nikon D70. I am assuming 72 is for email/internet to be displayed and if its printed it would be pixelated.

Cheers.

DPI can confuse things. A 2.5Mb jpg is very printable up to A4, and even beyond.
Raw is a waste of space, and gives you little more than a high quality JPG. It can also be really slow to save to the memory card. I compared a 17Mb tiff to a 2Mb jpg of the same thing and it was really hard to spot the difference.
Print it and see.
