Hey guys... just a query here.

When exactly did our online language change to incorporate 'words' like g33k, l33t, 3l33t, haxx0r, n00b, r0xx0r and über?

And who started it?

As far back as I can remember these words are when I first entered the direct connect network, october last year.

It has not been and never will be incorporated in my online language. B-)

leet speak or 1337 speak or 1337 5p34|< (it has varying levels of... there's no way to put it nicely) has been around for some time.. there's plenty of information about it within reach of a simple google search

I like the comments here:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/030110.html

most notably:
"On the scale of linguistic complexity, basic leet is about on a par with pig Latin,"

>What I wanna know is who came up with:
>w00t

There are two major schools of thought here, one is related to everquest and I forget what the story there is, and the other story is that it's related to the old old days of cracking when everything was unix, upon gaining root access the successful cracker would yell in celebration "root!" or type into IRC/BBS "r00t!" Mix that with the early 90's (waaaahooooo) and you get w00t

TMYK ;)

and another link of partial relevance:

oh for post editing...

btw, über is german, it loosely translates out to "super" or "above" (super means "above" if you were not aware; a boat's superstructure is the structure "above" water, superman has abilities "above" that of a normal man etc) so there is technically nothing wrong with its usage in online language, as you may have noticed - english uses a lot of words from different languages, latin and german included ;)

Well PoWa ,
It seems these retards have invented a new written language, no easy task, even for the most scholarly achiever. No doubt these same retards will be writing very complex programs in the near future,to our benefit.
Go you young retards, and best of luck to you.

Hook.

Hah! Sif! lol. The c++ compiler would crash before accepting leet speak as code. Even if they were smart enough to create a leet compiler, that would be so screwed up it would fry your motherboard, cpu and spin your dvd rom drive up so fast the dvd would fly out and kill you.

They are nothing more than retards trying to get attention.

What? Substituting letters and deliberate misspelling isn’t inventing squat, it’s the mindless babble of the stupid.

There again some people may not recognise certain Linux commands.

There are DOS commands as well for example.

I must admit that I can't read my Wife's knitting pattern though.

I hope people recognize that "Why can't people recognize the beauty of leet???" was the deciphered version of "y c@N'+ p30p13 R3kO9nIZ3 +eh 834UTy uv 1337???"

Not my viewpoint.

I just prefer English. Please note that "recorgnise" in your earlier post is not part of that language.

I guess we have to realise that we are into texting now and therefore have to try to work out what the other person is saying.

Is this communication????

I don't really expect an answer here.
