i am going to upgrade my pc with new motherboard , cpu, ram etc
and am runing windows 98 and want to network them together

now heres the question my laptop runs xp which is borught an paid for . an was wondering if i
can use the copy of xp from my laptop on my pc or do i have
to purches xp again

If it is an OEM copy, you can't. (As the helpful man at Microsoft Activation told me). That's how they keep down the cost of OEM copies, tieing it to one machine permenantly. Makes me wonder if we will still have to activate Windows XP re-installs in 2015. (Think how old, but still useful for today's software, Windows 95 is now!)

It doesnt matter if its oem or retail.

Nether will work.

Oem can be tied into the exsisting systems hardware and won't even install or it could be identical to the retail version...In which case it will install but can't be activated and will stop working after 14 days.

You will have to purchase XP again probably, as it is highly likely that your laptop came with a recovery disc or partition compatible with your laptop only.
