Hi in an old computer i hav got, its got a 64mb sdram chip
when i boot up it only finds 16mb and windows says thats all it has aswell.

a friend said something about ram buffer in cmos but i cannot find anything

can someone please help me out

a very old computer might only take 16Mb as the maximum.

sounds more like the SDram chip is half dead or the socket on the motherboard.

Suggestions:

(1) Go into the BIOS and under Advanced or Chipset Setup might be the memory timing parameters. Select Bios or Setup defaults (which are usually set to the slowest settings). Save setttings and reboot. See what happens.

(2) Find out type of motherboard and check specs on the manufacturers website to see if it supports 64MB of ram(maybe that should be the first thing).

(3) if you have more than one bank on the Motherboard swap round. This would indicate a faulty bank and possibly MB is on it's way out.

(4) Borrow a stick of Ram from someone and test to ensure the Ram you have isn't faulty.
