Dear Folks

Has anyone else had problems with installing an HP OfficeJet 6110 with Windows XP (Home Edition)?

The installation bombs out right at the end of the process. The HP website is full of information but nothing solves the problem and, after a long time on the phone to the HP HelpDesk, their final suggestion was to send out a new copy of the installation CD (which resulted in exactly the same problem!).

Cheers

Rohan

What error messages, if any, do you get. USB or parallel connection. Does it bomb out, when you start up the machine after plugging in the printer (ie, software/drivers already installed). What are your machine specs including CD drive and any other devices on the chain.

Dear Murray

The installation process seems to be three stage - copying over the files from CD, physically linking the printer (by USB) and then installing the drivers. It's on the last stage that it stops with the chirpy error message:

"Cannot install this hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware
HP OfficeJet 6100 Series
An error occurred during the installation of the device
The system cannot find the file specified."

Unfortunately, it doesn't bother to say which file it can't find which might have been very useful!

Our PC is well spec'd and we've had no problems linking other USB peripherals (printer, camera, etc) before.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Blimmin helpfull aren't they. Why bother with a message if it doesn't communicate anything!

USB printers and in my experience HP are very fussy as to the exact steps you take with installation. Can you tell who's error message it is? eg: Windows, Windows installer, HP's, Installshield/InstallWise/etc. This may give a pointer to the missing software.

Does the printer show up in Control Panel > Printers or System > Hardware > Devices? If so you could try installing/updating drivers from there but chances are this will not work.
