For the last 3 months or so I have had trouble with windows update.
I click on update.
Window starts checking for the latest version of windows update.
I then click on "check for updates" and a message comes up
"Windows update error. Windows update has encountered an error and can not display the requested page. The windows update servers are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
I understand that the windows update service has been down at times, but not for 3 months surely.
Any help would be welcome.

Try posting the Entire Error message here, IIRC it has the option somewhere to show you the whole message.

What url (web address) are you using? Try this one:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

look under c:/windows for a windowsupdate log. it may have an error message in it.

do you run any form of add blocking (eg host file)??

I am not using a firewall.

I will check the update address I am using.

I have Win98SE also & haven't had any problems with the update site.

Peter H's link doesn't work for me, however. But Tommy's picks up the site easily. Try that, if you haven't already?

The last updates I've had were:

4 February - Cumulative Security Update (KB832894)
5 December - Root Certificates Update
13 November - Cumulative Security Update (KB824145)
5 October - Cumulative Patch (KB828751)

If you were up to date 3 months ago, it appears you may have missed only the most recent one.

I had this problem briefly and found my way to an instruction to use the URL as follows:

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

For some reason after installing a Microsoft update it became nececcary to access the secure server. Now the plain old http:// works again!
Give it a try, no harm in it.

I tried using the various updating addresses advised but with no success.
I managed to locate my update log.
The most important line reads:
download status value = FAILED Error Code 2147467260

Any ideas on what this means?

Thanks

This has happened to people before. I no longer remember all the details but here is a start point:

Did you try clicking the link in my last post? Should open the update site in a new window (if it's going to work for you!)

The error code is a standard code saying that the link you typed was not able to be followed, see here...

I have tried all of the suggested links with no joy. I am now working my way through Rob's check off link for update errors.

Thanks

Problem solved.

I worked my way through Robs web link and fixed the problem with step 8.

That was by deleting all the contents in C:\program files\windowsupdate\V4

With an empty folder in V4, windows update worked!!

My thanks to everyone who answered
