I want to access an old computer to remove some files from the hard drive using the com port and extract them to my notebook,I have the plugs and cable, but don't know how to wire them up.
XP has a setup utility to setup the XP for com port access, the other PC with the data on is using 98SE not sure how hard it is to set this ones com port to match the XP notebook.
has anybody tried this before,
Thanks,
John.

what you need is a cable called a "null modem" cable.

in windows look for "direct cable connection"

this will let the two systems network and move files back and forth.

MS call their configuration for this "DCC" (Direct Cable Connection). You need a "null modem cable". I don't know if XP has DCC. :D

If your XP machine doenn't use NTFS, or can have a FAT partition added, you could make a floppy to boot DOS on it, and use the old DOS file transfer ... was it called FILELINK? (Heather P will remember )

If you want to make a cable, "null modem pinout" to Google will get you a list of connections.
