hi,I have a laptop with XP & IE6.For a few weeks the startup sequence stops when all of the desktop is loaded except for about four programs in the system tray by the clock. After about two minutes everything bursts into life again & loads the last few programs, then I can carry on.I do not want to use the restore program--any ideas? rdee

That sounds like some programs are having a wee fight over loading during startup. Do you have Norton Antivirus software? That sometimes causes problems in the background whilst programs are trying to load.

What you can do, is reduce how many programs are automatically loading each time the computer is turned on. Not all these programs need to be running automatically, as they can be started manually by picking them off the Start Menu etc.

To see what programs are loading automatically, go to Start > Run. Enter in msconfig - OK. Look under the startup tab. You will see a variety of programs listed, but their names might be a bit cryptic. Use this (http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.php) as a guide, look up each entry here (http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php) to see whether you need them all. Reducing the number of unnecessary programs loading, may help with your delayed final loading of the desktop.

If you have any questions about any of the programs listed under Startup Tab, post back here with them.
