If I wish to transfer video from a VHS tape to my computer, do I need a capture card or will my graphics card (Nvidia Ultra FX5900) with vivo do the trick?

Your grapics card will do it.

I guess I need software to see the picture I'm capturing also .... any advice on what's best?

Will software like Premiere Pro or Vegas Video suffice, or do I need something else first before using video editing software?

Your card should have come with a captering program, check the drivers disk,i would try that first.

Otherwise many video editing programs can do capturing,Its unknown to me if the 2 you listed do so.

AFAIK, You can use VirtualDub to do just that (Capture), and if you get an XviD Binary, you can compress it real well too :-)

Virtualdub is very highly regarded as a capture program,I was never able to get it to work with my card so have no personal experience capturing with it,but many insist its the mutts.

I will however say that its an excellent sledgehammer video editor.
