View Full Version : Nightmare startup problem

I am assembling a PC for a friend and it is turning into a nightmare.
So far I have assembled the PC with a 20gig HDD, Actima 50x CDRom drive, Panasonic FDD, 128mb PC100 (I-Proc)Ram,Voodoo3-2000 AGP Videocard all connected to a Jetway 993AN motherboard which has a Via Apollo Pro 133 Northbridge chip (VT82C693A) and a Via VT82C596B Southbridge chip onboard. I have a Celeron533 installed and expected to be able to just bootup normally after assembly and fdisk/format and install win98.

Well. so much for expectations. I cannot even get a POST beep and have not had any visuals on the monitor yet. When I power on the HDD thrashes for 5 seconds the FDD light comes on, the CDrom light comes on then goes out, all the internal fans run, the lights on the keyboard light up then turn off completely and when all this is finished I have a lovely blank screen and no ability to do anything with the PC at all no matter what I try. I never see anything at all onscreen all through this short boot thrash.

I have other PC's so I have swapped in working Ram,another HDD, disconnected the CDRom, Swapped all the cables out, tried booting with a win98 startup disk, checked and rechecked all the motherboard jumper settings, tried a PCI videocard and a different AGP card that are working in other PC's, swapped monitors, completely taken it apart and rebuilt it 2 times, swapped to working keyboards and mice from my other PC's and still have not seen any evidence of the bios or heard any POST related beeps at all. The power is definately getting to all devices and the motherboard but as I cannot even get into the Bios I am stumped and have bits of 3 PC's spread all over my room which is driving me nuts. This motherboard is brand new out of the box as are all the other parts so I am completely bamboozled by what is happening. I do a fair amount of repairs, upgrades and new builds for friends and have never seen anything like this before. Could it be related to the motherboard chipset (It is very new as it supports PC-133 Ram)?

Has anybody out there got any ideas that I can try or know of bugs with this particular chipset. Its got an award bios but as I have not seen the bios yet I do not know how it is configured and cannot get into it in any way that I know of.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I will try anything at all to get this thing going.
